Unsportsmanlike conduct...again

About one in five West Virginians are going to take a hit if Congress allows a temporary boost to the SNAP or food stamp program to expire this fall. You can read more in this issue brief and this news article.

I'm not sure how much hope to hold out for Congress. To use just one example, a representative scolded a nun for asserting that the government had a responsibility to help the poor. The nun in question, Sister Simone Campbell, responded by saying that  "Justice comes before charity."

(This is probably not the official position of the American Friends Service Committee, but I kinda wish she had a ruler like the one in the Blues Brothers movie.)

To paraphrase a line from Hamlet...

"...madness in great nuns must not unwatched go." In this case, however, the madness is really righteous indignation.

Here's the deal: a group of Roman Catholic sisters are traveling over 9 states to highlight the harm the House Republican federal budget would do to vulnerable families. I hope they metaphorically whack a few knuckles with a ruler like the nun did in the old Blues Brothers movie.

WV Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, alas, voted for the Ryan budget for the second year in a row, while her Republican counterpart in the state's northern district, Congressman David McKinley, to his credit voted against it for the second year in a row.
